Did you know that most internet traffic is actually being encrypted? Specifically speaking, 70% of it globally. Although right now, encryption levels have dropped lower, at 60%, at least for the mobile internet.

Normally, encryption is done at the discretion of the company that is providing the service. For example, WhatsApp encrypts all of their communications.

However, for mobile phone owners that want to encrypt their own internet, there are also plenty of tools out there right now. Let’s go over some of them.

#1 Gold Lock 3G

Gold Lock 3G has been licensed by the Israeli Ministry of Defense and aims to provide you with military grade encryption for both data and voice communications.

You don’t need to have VoIP, this app will automatically encrypt your calls, text messages, and file transfers. This encryption works across GPRS, WiFi, and Cellular levels.

The company states that it gives you triple layered security, and that it can be used on BlackBerry, Android, and iPhone.

The company was founded in 2003 and now employs over 30 specialists, including tactical mathematicians, analyzers, and security software developers. It provides mobile encryption products as well as custom security solutions for military and government organizations.

#2 Cellcrypt

This particular company uses double layered RC4-384 and AES-256 in order to give you a new key for each text message and call.

Cellcrypt has its very own VoIP infrastructure that will allow you to use low data rates. The calls are using narrow band adaptive voice codec, so that the calls don’t hog up your bandwidth.

It operates over all major networks including WiFi, satellite, and mobile and will work on Android, iOS, Windows 8.1, PBX and BB10. There will soon be a desktop version.

All customers have access to a secure PBX service. This particular gateway integrates PBX with NG-compatible end point encryption from Cellcrypt. Any Cellcrypt NG enabled smartphone will be able to connect to landlines and even have voicemail and call forwarding.

This company has a patented mobile encryption engine that authenticates and then secures all types of communication.
KoolSpan can run on the standard smartphone as well as network connected devices.

It can even be ran on Trustonics trusted execution environment, which happens to be a secure area that uses the application processor on the phone.

This solution is great for BlackBerry, Android, and iPhones.

#4 PhoneCrypt

PhoneCrypt

PhoneCrypt states that they have military grade AES-256 and RSA-4096 bit encryption. The same type of technology that is used by the CIA and FBI.

The software is able to run through internet connectivity via 3G, EDGE,W-CDMA, HSPA,GPRS,WiFi, and UMTS, and it is compatible with mobile and landline phones. It works in real time and it won’t affect the way your phone functions.

It works by automatically generating new encryption keys before each call. This combination is then changed every 4 seconds and prevents your communication from being intercepted.

The secure data will never be saved on your phone and you aren’t required to do anything. It uses less than 150 Mhz, which means that it won’t drain your battery.

#5 Orbot

The Tor Project has really made a name for itself through their desktop browser, which uses onion routing. This tends to be more secure than your simple encryption as it will encrypt and then bounce the traffic at random all over the globe through volunteer routers.

Android users will be able to install Orbot package which was designed to allow users to access instant messaging, email, and internet without blocking or tracking.

You can install it from an F-Droid repository, manually from Guardians site, or Android Market.

The source code is available in the Orbot git repository, but you should note that TOR has stated that this may not give you the most recent TOR version.
